How this page works:

Each month all patches applicable released by Microsoft are applied in a test environment at Desire2Learn. Desire2Learn staff examines all patches and determines if any specific directed testing is necessary based on the potential impact upon a Windows Server 2003 machine, SQL Server 2000, and Desire2Learn Applications. Regardless, all patches are indirectly tested.

Directed testing is a specific test performed to ensure the platform still behaves as expected in a particular situation. In the event Desire2Learn finds a patch that causes problems, an explanation will be posted here along with consequences and any workarounds as we develop them.

Note that patches are still important, even if they aren't deemed to require direct testing. That just means we determined that they were unlikely to impact the Desire2Learn platform in a negative way.

Microsoft's regular patch cycle releases patches on the second Tuesday of each month. We will update this page by the third Tuesday of each month. In the event of a special out-of-cycle Microsoft Patch, Desire2Learn will evaluate the release and will update this page as soon as testing is completed.

Please note that only Server side patches are examined here, not client side (for example, Internet Explorer patches would not be under consideration here, for IE7 information see this).

Important Notes:

• Do not apply Client side patches (e.g. Internet Explorer patches) to Servers.
• Desire2Learn continues to recommend not installing Internet Explorer 7 to servers, but if you do install Internet Explorer 7 and the associated patches, a workaround is required. Without this workaround there will be severe impact on platform tools including Discussions and the Learning Repository. The workaround can be found here



• Service Pack 1 for Windows Server 2003 has been approved for all Desire2Learn versions.
• Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 has been approved for use in 8.1 and newer versions of Desire2Learn's Learning Environment.
• R2 for Windows 2003 has been approved for use in 8.3 and newer versions of Desire2Learn's Learning Environment.



• SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (up to hotfix 2040) has been approved for all Desire2Learn versions (up to and including 8.2.3, but not beyond).
• SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (in SQL2000 compatibility mode) has been approved on all Desire2Learn versions starting at LE 8.1.2 MR3 / 7.4.3 MR2, LiveRoom 4.1 and Holding Tank 2.1 MR2
• SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (in SQL2005 compatibility mode) has been approved on all Desire2Learn versions starting at LE 8.3.0
